Preserved 250 Class Railcars

Railcar 255, has just arrived at Tailem Bend along with BMC1, 106 and 25, having worked a special train from Adelaide This was to be the last time the Standard gauge set was to work out of Adelaide. April 2002.

 

The 250 class railcars entered service between 1954 and 1959. There were 11 railcars in total. So far there are five railcars that have either been retained as operational  museum pieces or have been restored to operational condition. CFCLA own operational railcars 254 and 255, whilst Fair Australia Tours own railcars 251 and 252. However these railcars have been up for sale for quite some time.  The National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide owns railcar 257. All of these railcars are in operable condition.

 

251 - Lowan

Gauge: Broad (5ft 3")

Ownership: Barossa Wine Train, Fair Australia Tours Ltd. - Up for Sale

Entered Service: September 1954

Buffet: Yes, fitted in March 1973

Placed into Storage: 3rd February 1993

Withdrawn from Australian National: 3rd December 1995

To Bluebird Rail: December 1995

Re-Entered Service: April 1998

April 2003 - Placed into storage at Islington Workshops, following the cessation of Barossa Wine Train tours.

 

Notes: Railcar 251 was one of the three serviceable 250 class power cars remaining in service at the time they were placed into storage (February 1993). Name changed to 'Merlot' during mid August 2001.

 

252 - Blue Wren

Gauge: Broad

Ownership: Barossa Wine Train, Fair Australia Tours Ltd. - Up for Sale.

Entered Service: 18th August 1955

Buffet: Yes, fitted during December 1971

Withdrawn from Australian National: 3rd December 1993

To Bluebird Rail: December 1995

Re-Entered service: April 1998

April 2003 - Placed into storage at Islington Workshops, following the cessation of Barossa Wine Train tours.

Notes: 252 along with 251 and 258, was one of the last three operable power cars at the time the class was placed into storage.  Car had it's name changed to 'Chardonnay' during mid August 2001

 

254 - Brolga

Gauge: Standard

Ownership: CFCLA

Entered Service: 5th September 1955

Buffet: No

Placed into storage: sometime in mid 1992

Withdrawn from Australian National: December 1995

Sent to Victoria: 24th November 1998

Returned to Adelaide: June 1999

Returned to original colours: May 2001

Last revenue run for Bluebird rail: April 2002

Listed for sale in end of year asset sale for CFCLA: November 2002

 

255 - Curlew

Gauge: Standard

Ownership: CFCLA

Entered Service: 29th March 1956

Buffet: No

Placed into Storage: March 1992

Withdrawn from Australian National: December 1995

Sent to Victoria: 30th December 1998

Returned to Adelaide: 13th June 1999

Returned to original colours: May 2001

Listed for sale with 254 and 106 in CFCLA end of year asset sale: November 2002

Sent back to Victoria: March 2003

Arrived Back in Adelaide: November 2003 attached to train No.7MA5. Covered in Graffiti.

 

257 - Kestrel
